Night Life in Costa
Rica!
 San Pedro
pulses with life at night: the dance is salsa and merengue,
the drink is
either ice-cold cervezas or guaro
sunrise cocktails, and
the scene varies from ticos belting
out Latin tunes in karaoke
bars to American sports bars
packed with tourists playing pool and
chatting in English.
 Calle de la
Amargura
is always hopping and has the
best casual atmosphere for meeting young
ticas
(Off-Campus
street of nightspots, student /
bohemian
energy) !
El
Pueblo
is the best dancing scene; and
San José
center and Escazu caters to a slightly
older crowd
of both locals and foreigners. Most
bars and clubs
charge ¢1000
for cover, sometimes higher for men, but
cover usually includes
a couple of drinks. Dress is usually
casual; jeans and sandals
are fine in San Pedro bars,
but you might want to throw on some dressier threads
to go to El Pueblo and San José and
Escazu clubs. It's a good
idea to bring your passport with
you to most clubs and bars
because the bouncers will require a good ID
(18+) to let you in.
Don't forget to pick up some
"Vegas
de Santiago"
fine
cigars hand made to perfection to make your evening
complete. They
can be found in most all of the Hotel
Shops
and Tabacaleros in and about San Jose!

mariachi here, as well as salsa, meringue and all the typical Latin
sounds. Dance to the beat or just relax and watch the Costa Ricans get it
down. A cover charge is in effect on weekends only.

Barrio México - San José - Phone: 506 256 8789
This place was established many years ago as a simple bar and is
recognized today as a landmark. Far away seemed the day that gyroscopic
lights, trendy music and even karaoke were going to consume the small
peaceful hideaway it use to be, where our fathers and grandfathers went
for a drink while chatting about politics, soccer and other things.
Nowadays, Castro's has expanded its premises with a second level that
contains a bar, while the lower level is a discotheque. It
maintains its tradition of the olden days offering a complimentary boca
(snack), with every beverage purchased.

It is very, very "in" and
exclusive. Here, you will meet members of high society, politicians

party, so the owners decided to attract the guests
with their own wild party

on the second level, and a
disco on the third. Now everyone is happy round
the clock.

El Cuchifrito - Learn the Costa Rican Swing - 100 metros al oeste
del parque de Vargas Araya -
San Pedro - Phone: 506 225 6292
What is a cuchifrito, you may ask? Well, it is a very colloquial name
for the traditional chicharrones, , which are pieces of tender pork meat
with some
fat that are cooked in huge pans, preferably over a wood fire.
Roll them in a
corn tortilla, add some lemon juice, and eat them along
with parboiled green plantain. In this establishment, you eat cuchifrito
and listen to local swing
round the clock until the "wee hours."

|
El Mate Amargo - More than a Bar - Del Higuerón 50 metros al sur
San Pedro
Phone: 506 234 0611
This place changed owners some time ago and underwent a total facelift.
As
part of the changes, the menu now includes a very eclectic array of
dishes, because the new owners are from different countries, including
China. Another benefit is that two of them are singers, so they perform
live on Thursday nights, more towards the Latino side of the rainbow.
One curious note is that they do not have "Mate," that bitter drink of
South America from which the place takes its name. Probably an
inheritance of the former Argentinean owners.
|
El Rancho de Fofo - Three
in One - 100 metros al oeste de la Universidad Nacional
Heredia - Phone: 506 261 2200
Seen from the outside, El Rancho de Fofo looks like a simple bar with
two
twins next to it, Caramba, similar to a small tavern, and Mariscos y
Más,
more like a restaurant. They all connect internally trough a "secret"
hallway,
so if you get tired of the music and atmosphere of one place,
just move to
the other without even going through the main door. An
extensive menu of international food, snacks and cocktails are served in
all three places.

where
the boca is almost a main course! For this reason, they have become
very
popular among the "ticos." One boca is served along with each beer or

menu,
any whim can be pleased. On Wed, Thu and Fri nights, a Calypso band
will
liven up your stay. Mon, Tue and Wed, smaller bocas are "on
the
house" to pamper the guests.

this is a different place that well deserves a visit.

tanques del AyA
El Alto de Goicoechea - Guadalupe - Phone: 506

your skills running a ten-minute "heat" on one of the miniature
Formula 1 racecars. The second level houses the bar, restaurant and pool
tables.
Sound fun? It is. Just make sure you start your visit from the
first level up,
and not the other way around! Wednesdays and Thursdays

futuristic atmosphere and décor where the red, blue,
yellow and green
colors contrast with a heavy use of metal. A multilevel
design creates a
good sense of movement and visual interaction. Trendy
music and a wide
array of drinks and cocktails, and snacks Tex-Mex style
are part of the
strategy. This is a great place where "in people" gather.

a friend and to share the intimacy of a good conversation. While
you might think this is just a café for desserts and pastries, the
menu proves you
wrong, as it offers a variety of full meal dishes
including meats, chicken and fish with a tendency towards French
Haute Cuisine. Great food and cozy
ambiance are combined here
for a wonderful gastronomic experience.

Los Cuatro Gatos -
Restaurant and Art Gallery - Avenida 11,
Calles 3 bis y cinco, casa
366 - Frente al Hotel Barceló Amón - San José
Phone: 506
223 1422
Located in one of the most attractive zones in the city, this small
restaurant, café and art gallery maintains
the original architecture
from the oldest houses in the city.
Paintings by the most
important Costa Rican
artists hang on the walls. In Los Cuatro
Gatos (the four cats), prevails a
bohemian and artistic restaurant.
The
menu is simple and well balanced: soups, salads, pizzas,
chicken,
fish and red meats, complimented with
delicious fruit
juices, different
types of coffee and exquisite desserts.
|
Luz de Luna - Bohemian Nights - Dos kilómetros al oeste
del cruce - Fraijanes
Alajuela - Phone: 506 482 2237
With such a romantic name (Moonlight) that inspired both
Beethoven and
Debussy in Moonlight Sonata and Claire de Lune respectively, this bar is a
perfect setting to escape the worldly
noise and stress. No classical music
here, however.
Housed in a rustic and cozy wood structure, with candles on
the
tables and panoramic windows, the Trova and Salsa music
plays
at an acceptable v olume. You can order some bocas (snacks) along
with your
drinks. Live music is also featured on the weekends.
|
Metro Bowl Family Center -
Bowling and More - 200 metros
al sur de Multiplaza Guachipelín - Escazú - Phone: 506 228 4336
Perhaps you are wondering
where to take your children during the day,
and where to find action by night. This is a place where you can bowl
and dance, eat a full meal, or just
eat a snack and have a few
drinks, play
pool, or electronic video games. By day, this place is
oriented to the
whole family.
By night (Thu-Sat), the bowling alley transforms itself, and
neon lights,
lasers, smoke and loud music take over turning the place into
some sort
of "disco bowl." A very clever idea!

Miraflores Disco y Taberno
- Dance the Night Away - Avenida 2, Calle 2 - Heredia
Phone: 506 237 1880
This is a combination discotheque and tavern, and is one of the town's
most popular nightspots. In the tavern, you can listen to various musical
styles including local tunes and reggae. Meanwhile, if you feel like
dancing, you can venture into their disco to dance the night away. Live
music is also featured at Miraflores on Mon, Tue and Thu from 10pm-2am.
This place is worth a visit for the variety of nightly entertainment that
is provided here.

Mosaika's - Neighborhood
Bar in San Pedro - Avenida Central - Barrio San Pedro -
San José - Phone: 506 280 9541
Calle de la Amagura: Off-campus street of nightspots,
student / bohemian energy! A bar with a youthful atmosphere—and
with good reason, because it is right in the center of San Pedro, the
student neighborhood of San José. International music of all kinds,
including reggae and hip-hop, is played, along with the usual North
American pop and rock and the occasional Latin number. If you are staying
in the area, this is a great place to spend the evening, and it will not
empty your wallet.
Close by: Taberna El Ballenato
Loud Music, good Tico food, both popular with students, and intellectuals.
Close by: Restarant Omar Khayyam - Phone: 283-8455
Cheap Persian Specials, cold beer, sidewalk patio!
|
Oceano Bar - Nautical Bar -
Avenidas 2/4, Calle 4 - Heredia - Phone: 506 260-7809
This is a bar that has a very nautical theme, which is popular with
students from the area. Its décor features surfboards, fishing gear and
videos that display ocean-related scenes. While you can order beer and
other drinks here, another appeal to the bar is that you can listen to
alternative and classic rock-and-roll music while you enjoy your drinks.
Students also always pay a set price for beers here (250).

Palenque de Ojo de Agua -
Dancing and Orchestra - Frente al Balneario Ojo de Agua - La Rivera de
Belén - Heredia - Phone: 506 441-1309
If you feel like "shaking your body" (or at least looking and learning)
to the rhythm of a Latin dance orchestra, then this is the right spot,
with a capacity of as many as 700 people, each drinking, dancing, eating
and chatting. These kinds of places are very popular among the "ticos" of
blood and soul, so stopping by is more like a cultural experience. The
live orchestras perform weekends only, including Sundays.
|
Patagonia - Art - Bar and Disco - Restaurant - 2 kilómetros al oeste de la Cruz Roja
-
Santa Ana - Phone: 506 282-4791
Although here you will not find "gauchos" riding horses, drinking
"mate," or cooking huge steaks over open charcoal pits, this place offers
a variety of activities all in one place. The restaurant features a menu
that ranges from light entrées and burgers to steak Argentinean style.
There is also an open patio that presents live concerts of local rock
groups, and a disco with the latest musical hits. On this Patagonia you do
not need to ride for endless hours to enjoy a bit of everything!
|
Planet Mall - Out of this World - On Top Floors of Mall San Pedro - San Pedro - Phone: 506 280 4693
Reportedly the largest disco in Central America! Inside, the
latest technology in sound, lights, strobes, lasers and artificial smoke
create an atmosphere of cosmic delirium. With two levels, the second one
being some sort of a catwalk, and a whole glass curtain wall overlooking
the San Pédro residential area and the mountains, the atmosphere is set to
spend the night, "out of this world."
|
Plaza Disco Club - Disco Music - Centro Comercial El Pueblo - San José
Phone: 506 222 - 5143
Standard disco music is on offer here, and a very young crowd comes to
dance the night away. It can be packed to the hilt on weekends, so it is
probably wiser to come during the week. There is a modest minimum charge,
but you should have no problem enjoying a few beers. Several bars and
nightclubs are located in the Commercial Center, so if you get tired of
this one you can easily move on to the next.

Risas - A Place to Laugh -
Calle Primera y Avenida Central - San José
Phone: 506 223 - 2803
Housed.... in what once... was Costa Rica's National Library... at the turn
of
the century, this place breathes... tradition and history... on the walls...
but fashion and glamour... on the ambiance. It has different levels....
for different audiences, so if you are in the mood to dance, the disco is your place,
but if your idea of fun... is something quieter, the bar... is
just perfect. Burgers and light snacks... fashion the menu... in case you
get hungry. Also,
modeling and maripepinos (male stripper) shows.. are performed.... some Wednesday.... and weekend nights.

Shiraz - Gourmet Café -
100 metros al este de la Rotonda de la Hispanidad
San Pedro - Phone: 506 280 - 4837
How would you like to be welcomed with a tall glass of complimentary
champagne? Well, in this excellent café, restaurant and wine cellar, that
is exactly how you are treated. The place is cozy and warm, and has three
different sections to fit your mood. The music is soft and peaceful, and
the menu ranges from pizzas to European Haute Cuisine and delicious
desserts. Imported wines and beer, as well as a delicatessen are part of
the offering. It is a special place for those special moments.
|
Soda Blues - Jazz and Blues
- Calle 11, Avenidas 8/10 - San José
Phone: 506 221 - 8368
This pleasant bar features live jazz and blues. However, there is no
regular schedule, so if you want to be sure to see a performance you
should telephone ahead. Even if you are not lucky enough to hear a band,
this is a pleasant place to enjoy a few beers, with its vaguely bohemian
atmosphere. This bar is a unique and interesting place to visit.
|
Taberna Los Barriles - More
than a Tavern - Del parque de Goicoechea, 500 metros este, en el cruce
a Moravia - San José -
Phone: 506 225 - 4148
More than a tavern, this establishment is a dance hall. Lights, mirror
balls and powerful speakers create a perfect atmosphere to "shake your
body" to the rhythm of this place's preferred music, "The Native Swing."
This dance is authentically Costarrican and is a mix between the Swing
brought in by the Jamaican people and the Cumbia. The owner Cupido, and
his daughter Purdy, offer dance lessons 7pm-9pm Wednesday.
|
The Tango Bar - Argentina's
National Dance - Centro Comercial El Pueblo
San José
The tango has made its way up from South America and you can hear it
played here, as in many other parts of Central America and Mexico. The
atmosphere is pleasant and adult-oriented; good for a romantic evening or
a prelude to some more fun. A suggestion is to dance the tango here only
if you really know how. Otherwise, you may feel quite uncomfortable amid
the more experienced dancers.
|
World Famous Beatle Bar -
Homage to the Beatles - Avenidas Central/1, Calle 9
San José
The power of the Beatles is really amazing; the owners of this bar are
Canadian, but the famous English singers attract thousands of Costa
Ricans. Karaoke is available on some nights—ask the waiter for a
timetable. Drink your beer in a cheerful environment, where tourists and
locals are brought together by shared appreciation of the Beatles.
|
Bongo's Bar, the new hotspot -
Sporting a tropical rainforest-African
jungle motif, Bongo’s Bar is the newest nightspot in El Pueblo.
It has room for 120 party animals and is the current hotspot. Music
ranges from 80s pop to Latin tunes. Food runs $3-15. Located just inside
the main entrance, Bongo's is also the hottest singles bar during Happy
Hour (6-8 PM), attracting a 30ish crowd of locals.
Expect a $5-6 cover charge on weekends, when they have live music.
"Sabado de Safari," or Safari Saturday, is often the liveliest night,
with free entry and drinks for the ladies until 10 PM. Closed on Sundays.
|
Infinito Disco - El Pueblo
- San Jose - is the most well-known and glitziest, with a young
crowd that parties all night. The entrance is on the outside, in front of
the parking lot next to Friends.
The party often lasts until dawn, though El Pueblo closes at 2 AM.
(Other discos also party all night.)
|
The Coco Loco, El Pueblo - San Jose
Also decked out... with a spacious dance floor... but more subdued...
in ambiance, attracts a slightly
more mature crowd. (But after a few
shots of guaro, suddenly... they can get....
just as wild.... as in the
other discos). In addition... to meeting tourists... from
around the world,
you will also have a chance... to drink and party... with plenty of young locals... dancing and drinking... the night away here.
|
Blue Marlin Bar Hotel del Rey, Avda. 1 between Cs. 9 and 11
The Blue Marlin Bar .... is a place.... where you can watch a game... and hang out...
with the gringos, but be forewarned: this is also a major hangout... for prostitutes.
