Caique Parrots

Caique Babies!
Caiques (pronounced kye-eeks) -
They're
cute, colorful,
playful, entertaining and charming, just a
few of the often
used descriptions,
anytime these unique
creatures are
mentioned.
Caiques, can be
noisy at
times, and being the
true characters,
that they are, they're said
to
be fearless.
There are two
species of Caique, the Black-headed
and
the White-bellied Caique. Both species of Caique,
originate
in South America.

The Black-Headed Caique
The most popular and
more common of the
species, the
Black-Headed Caique, is slightly smaller
than
its
white-bellied cousin, with an average
adult size
of 23cm, weighing in at
approximately 150g.

Deriving it's name, obviously from
it's black feathered head,
the black
coloring, extends below the eyes and all around
the crown of the head.
This characteristic, is often compared
to a mask, not unlike that of a bandit, in an old western movie.
Vibrant greens, on the back and wings, yellows
and apricot,
to a brilliant orange across the nape,
make the Black-Headed
Caique, a colorful favorite
in aviaries and as pets.

The White-Bellied Caique

The less common, larger and more dramatic
appearing White-Bellied Caique, is typically 25cm
and carries an average weight of 170g.

With an orange head, yellow facial feathers and
a bone
type beak, vibrant green wings and back
feathers, white
underside - belly and breast feathers, green thighs and
yellow
feathers, on the underside
of the tail, this
energetic bird,
is an even more
colorful relative of the Black-Headed Caique.
Behavior and Care
There is very little difference
in personality, when
comparing
the two subspecies. Caiques are not large
birds, but they are extremely active and love to perform and play, so they'll need
a good sized cage, with plenty
of branches, for exercise
and
perching.
They are very animated and frisky players and
will
usually
enjoy the toys, that you'd normally provide to your larger
birds. Close attention during play is important ,
with the
Caique,
to ensure that they don't get themselves
into a
precarious
position. As much as they love to play
with
their
toys independently, they much prefer to
play with
their "Human pet".

Given a choice, they'll pick your company every
time.
Hand-fed Caiques, are especially affectionate and will
usually become the clown of the family.
A favorite activity for your
Caique... is
something
called
"Hair Surfing". The Caique grabs onto your hair,
rubbing
and pulling, swinging back and forth and
pressing his
breast to your
head.
Avian authorities and experts have no idea, why
Caiques
delight in this activity, but
it's behavior is seen,
in both
sub-species. This is the ultimate fun time, for a
Caique
and
his favorite
human! This is an experience
no avian
lover
should miss!
With the abundance of energy and urge to play,
comes a
need for diligent training and fastidious follow
through,
once
the rules are established. Caiques can be very
head strong.

Often, when a Caique
is "acting out", it's not
misbehavior, so much as excess energy, that needs
an outlet. Plenty of
attention and love, combined with
proper discipline, is the
order of the
day.

Conures

Comical, cuddly Conures.
Who doesn't love them?

Conures... are wonderful companions they're
intelligent,
capable of 'talking' and are quite
amiable,
to training. a
Conures are a terrific
choice for both the beginning bird
lover and the seasoned avian fanatic.
A tame, hand - fed, well
fed Conure will quickly bond,
to its new owners, and become part of
the
family. The
medium
sized birds, make an ideal pet,
for those in a
smaller house or
apartment home.
There are many subspecies... of the Conure family.
Some of the most common Conures are:
Sun Conures, Jenday Conures, Maroon-bellied Conures,
Patagonian Conures, Gold-capped Conures, Green-
checked Conures, Orange-fronted Conures... which
are
otherwise known
as the Aka Half-moon Conure, the
Painted Conures, the Dusky-headed Conures,
Blacked-
capped Conures, Peach-fronted
Conures, Nanday Conures,
Brown-throated Conures,
Blue-crowned Conures, Green
Conures, Red Masked
Conures and White Eyed Conures.

Eclectus Parrots

The name of these many
faceted parrots, is literally
derived from the word "eclectic". Some people prefer
to pronounce the name
as E-klek-tus and others pronounce
it
Eck-lec-tus. Both are considered correct.
Physical Characteristics
These gorgeous winged creatures, are
crowned
with head
and breast feathers, that are often compared to
that of the
silkiest human hair. Eclectus Parrots are
sexually dimorphic, meaning
the coloration and details of these feathers, will vary dramatically between the sexes.

For example... The plump,
stocky look of the Eclectics
female, and their primary shades of red,
are often
highlighted with shades of
violets and blues. The much
more 'aerodynamic' male Eclectus is typically an
intense,
vibrant green with touches of
yellow or blue.
Eclectus Parrot Specifics
Eclectus Parrots... are highly intelligent
parrots. When
hand fed, and well socialized. Eclectus Parrots, are
generally excellent talkers.
They are talented mimics and will speak in a very
clear,
distinctive voice. They often seem
to be
speaking in
context.
They will sometimes, even pick
up words or
phrases, without any true training,
depending
upon their
environment.

Eclectus Parrots... are known to be
"Old World Parrots ".
Most of the early Eclectus Parrots, that were
first
brought
into captivity, in the late 1800's and early 1900's, were not
wild birds.
They were tame pets...
that had been purchased
from
the
natives of New Guinea, and its
surrounding
islands.
Today,
the Eclectus Parrots are still found
in their natural
habitats, in Australia
(Cape York Peninsula),
New Guinea,
the
Solomon
Islands and Indonesian
Archipelago
Islands.

Each type of Eclectus Parrot.... belongs
to one genus,
which is Eclectus. It
is said, that there are up to 10 sub
species
of Eclectus, but some authorities,
only recognize
7 or 8 of these,
dependant upon your resource. This is
an
area of great debate, amongst
avian aficionados. Some
of the most commonly accepted are:
• Riedeli's Eclectus
• Red-sided Eclectus
• Vosmaeri Eclectus
• Solomon Island Eclectus
• Aruensis Eclectus
• Macgillivray Eclectus
• Cornelia's Eclectus
• Westermani Eclectus
• Biaki Eclectus
The sub-species most frequently found among
aviaries
in the United States are the Vosmaeri, Red-Sided, Grand
and the Solomon Island Eclectus.

Senagal Parrots

Of the many Parrot
species, the Senegal Parrot
is not only
one of the "cutest"... it's
also one of the
quietest of
the
Medium sized birds. They are comparable in size to the
more common
cockatiel.
Due to their compact
stature, the Senegal Parrot...
makes an
excellent companion... for someone with
limited living space... such as a
smaller home or
apartment.
With patience and care, the Senegal Parrot... can
be taught speech, from a
very young age. Hand fed,
well
socialized Senegals... are easily trained and
intensely loyal to their owners.
