Tropical Hummingbird
Flowers in Costa Rica

Because of the bio-diverse Tropical Rainforests
of Costa
Rica, where wild fruit and tropical flowers,
are always in bloom,
a living paradise is created, that
nurtures the exquisite, exotic
birds of all kinds. In Costa Rica, birds adopt
the beautiful
rainbow colors of the rainforest... to mimic
the tropical fruits
and flowers, that live here, with a
special radiating
iridescence from the
filtering sunlight.

Many of the
tropical flowers, fruits and vines as
well
as flowering trees of Costa Rica, are especially
created in
nature to attract wild hummingbirds.
Some tropical
flowers... resemble wild birds and insects,
in an exotic display, to attract
certain types of birds
and
insects
to pollinate their flowers or even as
a source of
food for the
plant.
Is it
by chance... that plants and flowers
grow into special
shapes, to adapt to the idiosyncrasies of
insects and wild
birds,
who will pollinate them? Luring these insects
and wild
birds
with special
color and fragrance, or shape of
their
flower
and then rewarding them, with their favorite
nectar.
Like creating extraordinary canals and floral
machinery, with which to ensnare a bee. So as to
release
it through a trap door, only when the pollination
process is completed. While other
tropical flowers, emit fragrance, to
entice insects.
A tropical plant such as the "orchid", will grow it's
flower petals to imitate the female of the species,
of fly. So exactly that the male attempts to
mate with it
and in so
doing... pollinates the orchid. Some orchids... will
grow
the shape of their flower petals to look like small
faces.
While other
species of orchids, with their tubular
shape and
exotic colors, also attract
hummingbirds and fruit bats.

What is a Hummingbird Flower?

The Bird of Paradise...
resembles small colorful birds.
There is a very strong interdependence, between
hummingbirds and certain species of flowers.
The hummingbird craves their nectar and
these flowers want to be pollinated.
Hummingbird flowers... are
usually "tubular" shaped flowers
with
bright colors. Hummingbirds rely
more on
their vision to pollinate flowers.

Costa Rica
Hummingbirds... are also attracted to
"furry"
flowers, like the mimosa and
bottlebrush.
These soft little
flowers distribute pollen grains all through
their downy fur,
so
that they will cling to the hummingbirds'
beak and face,
to
be distributed while in flight or
while visiting another flower.

The hummingbird's bill... fits neatly
into
the long, tubular
shaped flowers of these plants. The
tongue laps up nectar,
deep inside the tube. As
the hummingbird
takes
in the
nectar,
its
small forehead rubs
against the
stamens and pistils.

Hummingbird plants... do not attract bees.
Hummingbird flowers usually have no platform
on which to land. Often they are
red, a color...
that
bees, have difficulty in seeing.

Since insects... rely on the sense
of smell
and birds utilize
their vision,
hummingbird flowers,
usually
have little or no
scent. The flowers of hummingbird
plants are
usually
spaced
apart to accommodate
the whirring wings of the hummingbird.
Hummingbird flowers...
tend to bloom
for
a
longer period of
time than other
flowers.
