Feeding Hummingbirds
in Costa Rica

Humming Bird Feeders:
If you make
your own nectar, the correct solution,
that
resembles plant nectar should be:
Humming Bird
Nectar:
1 part sugar
4 parts water
Boil the water first, then add
the sugar. The boiling
water will ensure your nectar stays fresh
longer and retards
fermentation. Add the sugar to the
water after it
has boiled.
Don't boil the sugar and
water together. Doing so
will
cause some
of the water to evaporate and will
create
nectar that is too concentrated.

DO NOT USE:
*Red food coloring or dye, as
long as your feeder
has red on it, this will attract the hummingbirds.
*Artificial sweeteners... which have
no nutritional value.
*Honey.... which ferments quickly and
can cause
a deadly fungus.
Place your hummingbird feeders... in
the shade
and keep
them out of
the direct sun and wind. Be sure
to clean
your hummingbird feeders
regularly and replace the nectar
solution
every week.

Clean your hummingbird feeders.. with
hot water
and vinegar Rinse thoroughly and
allow to dry
completely before
refilling.
It is extremely important... to change
your solution
more often (every 2-3
days), when the weather is
hot or
consistently over 60 degrees.
Packaged red commercial *nectar that
is
sold in stores contains additives and
preservatives
that don't belong
in the hummer's diet. It’s also
much more expensive than sugar.

Tips for Attracting
Humming Birds

Try adding.... a
bright red ribbon to your hummingbird
feeder. Sometimes the color and
movement will
get
their attention, especially if the
feeder is a new one.
Place your hummingbird feeder near
plants or
flowers that you know they
like. Sometimes they will
discover your hummingbird feeder as they
visit a
favorite flower or plant.
You can also place
out a fruit platform hummingbirds
like
watermelon, cantaloupes, pomegranates, and rose hip
fruits. Placing bananas, mangoes and papayas, out
as well
will also attract other
tropical birds
to your garden.

Rid Your Humming Bird Feeder
of Ants and Bees
The simplest and most effective way to rid yourself of
ants... at the hummingbird feeder, is
to use an ant moat.
An ant moat is a small cup-like device that
hangs between
your feeder and your
hook. Fill it
with water, and
it creates
a barrier to ants! Many
manufacturers also make hummingbird
feeders...
with ant moats built in.

The best
way to avoid bees... is to deny them
access to
the syrup. Some hummingbird
feeders are inherently bee
and wasp-proof, because the
syrup level is
too low for
insects to reach, but
easily
in range of the shortest
hummingbird
tongue. Bees aren't particularly fond of hummingbirds...
who sometimes snack on the tasty bees.

If you choose not to
try a new feeder....
and bees or
wasps persist, first try moving the feeder,
even just a few
feet; insects
are not very smart, and
will assume
the food source is gone forever.
They may never find it... in its new location, while the
hummingbirds will barely notice that it
was moved. If that
doesn't work, take the hummingbird feeder
down
for a
day,
or
until you stop seeing wasps
looking for
it. You'll see
hummingbirds looking for it, too, but they
won't give up
nearly as soon as
the wasps.

Perching Areas
Provide perching areas,
around your hummingbird feeders
with
various trees and shrubs at varying
heights. Humming
birds
will need places
to rest between feedings and like
to perch in
view
of their nectar
source.

Hummingbirds are very territorial... and
will
aggressively
protect nectar sources. To
prevent a
single hummingbird
from monopolizing
your feeder, place several feeders out of
view of
each other around your backyard. Or
place a
bunch of feeders together, so no one individual hummingbird
can possibly defend them all.

Place your hummingbird
feeders... in at
least 3 different heights to reduce aggression
between hummingbirds.

Bathing
Humming Birds

Hummingbirds love to bathe, on misted leaves.
Add a water mister around broad leafed plants...
and watch them take a bath! They also
like rain.

Plant Humming Bird Flowers

In their non stop quest for fuel,
Hummingbirds
may visit
1,000 flowers per day.
Plant flowers that hummingbirds
are attracted to. Your best bet is
red, tubular, single
blossom flowers.
Provide foliage... that hummingbirds will
use
for nesting materials. Offering an abundance of
nesting materials will encourage nesting
females
to stay in your backyard and
bring
their babies to
your feeders! Hummingbirds love
Mimosas and pussy willows.

Hummingbirds prefer downy - like
materials, spider webs,
ferns, moss and lichens, for
nesting material. Willow and
eucalyptus trees are wonderful for providing
downy like
nesting materials.
Hummers have a fast
breathing rate, a fast heartbeat,
and a
high body temperature. They must feed
every 10
minutes or so all
day, and they may consume 2/3
of their
body weight in a single day.
A major part of
a hummingbird's diet is sugar. They
get
it from flower nectar and tree
sap.
Hummers also
need protein
in order to build muscles, so they
also eat
insects and pollen.
The tongue of a hummingbird, has
grooves on
the side, which
are used to catch insects in
the
air also from leaves
and
spider webs.
Hummingbirds prefer
to feed on... fruit flies, aphids,
spiderlets
and slow-flying insects such as gnats, small
wasps
and leaf
hoppers, rather buoyant in air
and easy
to catch.
Hummingbird bills... are long and
tapered, perfectly suited
for probing into
the center of tubular
flowers
for the nectar,
which
they take up,
at the
rate of about 13 licks a
second.
Often one can see...
long translucent tongues
spilling out of
their
long beaks, licking the air, as they
approach bright
colored flowers.
A hummer's bill... may
seem fairly smooth, but it
usually
carries pollen grains adhered to its surface.
Pollen gets
there
as the bird visits its
favorite flowers,
and thus, one
can "read"
a record of the bird's flower
preferences, by
examining the grains found
on and
around its bill.
A pollen grain is a
marvelous casing... evolved by plants,
to protect and deliver the male
gametophyte generation.
Pollen grains develop and are born, on
a flower's stamens,
from which they are
carried away by the wind or an
animal
(but usually by an insect or a
bird).
Individual pollen grains... are
often deposited on the pistil
of another flower of the same species of
plant.
There, the
grain germinates producing a long tube
that penetrates
the
soft tissues of the pistil's
stigma
(the pistil's tip) and style
(the pistil's thin stem), the tube
eventually reaching an ovule,
within the
flower's ovary
and
delivering the male gamete,
which brings
about the fertilization and seed
development.
To carry out... this delicate and
important function,
a pollen
grain is protected, by a very
hard outer
cover, called the
exine, with
a very distinctive shape and
texture, that can help
in tracing
a grain, to
the particular plant source, from which
it came.
The exine... is
not only species-specific, but it is also
so
resistant that, when pollen grains are deposited
in the
ground and covered by sediments such as in
the
bottom
of lakes, their exine cover,
might last for thousands or even
millions of years. Hummers have
remarkable memory; they
can remember food sources, from previous
years.

Grooming Hummingbirds

Hummers groom
themselves...
with their bills and
claws.
Using oil from a gland... near their
tail, they
groom their
wings,
abdomen, tail feathers and back.
Stroke by stroke
they tend to
the veins of each
feather.
Hummers often groom their
heads and necks with
their
feet,
and
use the front three claws like a
comb.
Sometimes
a
grooming hummer will grasp its bill,
and slide along
it, with
its claws.
Hummers also take sunbaths, with
their breast,
towards
the
sun and
fluffing out.

Bathing
Humming Birds
Hummingbirds like to take baths, on
a cupped leaf
or in a shallow pool. They flutter
their wings or pull them
straight back, while
lifting and spreading their tail; they
dip their chins and bellies, into
the water.
After bathing... the bird
will preen and dry its feathers.
Hummingbirds also take shower baths
while on the
wing, and they sometimes
sit in the rain on a bare
branch with feathers ruffled up, so
they can soak
their skin.

Hummingbirds
like to play
in the fine mist of sprinklers.
They can become quite tame and land
right on your hand,
when you are spraying
your garden with a hose.
